Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love)

i've just finished watching ayat-ayat cinta. a film adapted from a novel of the same title written by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. the novel portrayed the beautifulness of Islam and act as a medium of dakwah (spreading the religion) especially towards youngsters.

Fahri Abdillah (Fedi Nuril) is a student in Al-Azhar University in Egypt. he is an intelligent student who have targets in life. he strived towards his targets and gets most of it except for one. it is the target for marriage. as an obedient Muslim, he didn't mingle around with women for no reason thus have no experience in love. the only women close to him is his mother.

life started to change in Egypt when he suddenly found himself surrounded by four beautiful women who all have the heart for him. Maria Girgis (Carissa Putri), a Coptic-Christian neighbour has been friendly to Fahri and his friends since their time in Egypt. Maria was different than any other Christians. she was very attracted to the Holy Quran and even memorized it. when she was in coma, Fahri found out through her diary that she was in love with him. Fahri loved her as a friend but was not sure if it is more than that.

Nurul (Melanie Putria), also a student from Al-Azhar was also in love with Fahri. she wrote a letter to Fahri telling him about her feelings but was turned down by Fahri who have no feelings for her. Noura (Zaskia Adya Mecca) is another character in this story. she is an abused Egyptian neighbour. Fahri always stand up for her and sympathized her. at the same time, she silently developed a romantic feeling for him which later leads to a false accusation of rape.

when Fahri was on the metro one day, a narrow-minded Muslim ran amok when a Muslimah wearing fully covered hijab gave up her seat for an American. the man was angry towards Americans because of what their oppression towards Muslims in Palestin, Afghanistan and a few more places. the lady argued with the man until she was nearly hit by him. Fahri defended the lady and talked the man to his senses. when he saw her eyes, he immediately fall for her. she fall for him too. She is Aisha (Rianti Cartwright), a German Turkish studying in Cairo. I praise Rianti Cartwright for being able to show her emotions through only her eyes which is very hard to do.

who among these four will Fahri choose? this movie shows love the Islamic way, and how far someone would sacrifice. the movie deserve thumbs-up. I might even want to read the novel after this. one important message that I got from the movie was "Allah S.W.T will never give obstacles to someone more than what that person can endure."
