aut viam inveniam aut faciam

Tuesday, December 09, 2008

Aut viam inveniam aut faciam is a Latin motto that if were directly translated would mean, ‘I will either find a way or make one’. Generally, the motto is expressing that if there’s a will, there’s always a way. I’ve been holding to this motto for a long time. Coincidently, it’s also my school’s motto.

Why I hold on to such motto? Well, I believe, will is a very strong word. When you have a will, if Allah allows it, nothing could stand on your way. When doing something, will is very important. If you need to study for your exam but you hesitate, you will find many ways to not study. But if you have the will for it, nothing could distract you from doing it. Even if you came from a poor family and couldn’t afford to buy books, with the will you have, you wouldn’t mind going to the library to borrow some books for you studies.

Someone who is handicapped could do the same thing that the normal people do. If they don’t have any hands, the paint with their legs. If they don’t have any legs, they walk using their wheelchairs. If they don’t have any eyes, they see with their hearts. They play sports, they become people’s friend, they do craftwork, they do basically whatever we’re doing. And what do you think helps them overcome their weaknesses? It’s their will. Their will to be normal, to do things they’ve always wanted to do. And what we should have is the will to help them.

When you have the will, there’s also no room for giving up. People who are really willing and determined in doing something would never give up. They will find all the possible ways so that they can succeed in what they’re doing. Cause if there’s a will, there’s always a way. And when they have tried they’re very best, the outcome doesn’t matter anymore. Cause if they succeed, congratulations! But if they don’t, they’ll always try again.

By holding on to this motto, I have done much in improving myself. I like to do charity works, cause I like to put a smile on someone’s faces. There’s one time, I joined an event organized by my university. It’s a homestay program where we live with the villagers and help them with their daily chores that was held during the past Ramadan. I’m a city kid who’s very close to my family. I couldn’t stand being far apart from my family for so long. But for this event, I had to come back early, and can’t go home for more than a month (which is a long time for me as I usually go home every two weeks or so). But with the will I have to join this event, I put all of these aside. And it went well. I really enjoyed the event and never regret my decision.

Remember that I’ve told you about how bad I wanted the DVD that I’ve been looking for so long? I’ve been trying to buy it since a few years ago but I’ve never found it in the DVD stores. But my will to have the DVD is so strong, I didn’t given up looking for it till know. And hey, I’m only a few steps away from obtaining it. I took the barcode from a local DVD store website and Linkgave it to the store’s worker. And he’ll order it for me. Yeay! I just don’t know why I haven’t thought of it before this. Huh!

Then again, aut viam inveniam aut faciam. If there’s a will, there’s always a way. Till then. Tata!

Salam Aidil Adha

what's cool? what's hot? what's not?

Sunday, December 07, 2008

What’s cool? Hard to define right? Cool is a subjective matter. Definition of cool would be different if it were asked to different people. Generally, cool would mean great, the best, up to date and stuff like that. Someone who’s cool would be someone who’s up to date, knowing today’s trend and is very likeable by other youths around him. “That’s a cool band!” would mean that the band is playing great and the audiences fancy them.

So what’s the trend today? What’s considered cool? Well, from what I see, in terms of fashion, a cool guy would have short spiky hair or sometimes messy, wearing a simple t-shirt with a jeans or some baggy slack, a pair of snickers or a flip-flop and have some leather or beads bangle as their accessories. A cool girl would be wearing anything matching, with high heels or wedges or sometimes just some simple flip-flop with some accessories of their own. That’s what youths today are wearing. Come to think of it, would someone sporty look cool to a group of gothic? Would a mohawk look cool to some rich guy in a suit? Of course not! So, you should dress according to what you are. Then, you’re cool!

Youth’s today can never be separated with gadgets. What’s cool today is to have your own laptop which allows you to surf anywhere. I bet, a youth without a handphone would surely not be considered as cool. Cause handphone is like a necessity to youths today. With the fast growing of technology, a lot of gadgets are made available and affordable. Sometimes, someone with a Wii is always way cooler than someone with a PS2. Another trend today is having a DSLR. You’re not cool without one. But then again, who are you to judge who’s cool and who’s not cause cool can be judge from many different perspectives.

Another cool thing today is to have a friendster profile, or a facebook or a myspace or hi5 and the list goes on. Who doesn’t have those today? Even someone who doesn’t have internet connection in their home would have their own profile cause it’s ‘the thing’. It’s the trend, everybody is doing it and we should follow. Well, I believe it’s a good thing. Cause it’s one way that you can get connected with friends, old or new. Even the grown ups are having their own profile now.

Youths today spend most of their time on the internet. They blog, they chat, they play games. These are some cool stuff to do. They also spend their time with their friends in cinemas, karaoke box, or in futsal courts. These are some healthy stuff that are also cool. Some would consider smoking as cool. Don’t want to cause any spark here but is it cool to be a slave to the cigarette?

Using short forms like LOL and BFF while typing sms and chatting is cool. If you spell the words one by one, you’re not cool. Youths today have even developed their own language. They have they own slang that only they (or sometimes their parents) would understand. Some examples of slang have been discussed in our previous chapter which is Chapter 5. Click here to read Chapter 5.

Cool youth watch cool movies and series. Some of the movies and series considered cool to these youths are Heroes, Transformers, Twilight and other movies and series with the same genre. If a guy watches some cheesy romantic movies and cries after watching it, he’s not cool. And if a girl watches a horror movie without ever closing her eyes with her hands, she’s cool. Reality shows are another today’s ‘in thing’. If you don’t know what is Malaysian Idol, The Apprentice, Explore Race or One In A Million, you’re really not up to date. Believe me, even small kids would know who comes from which reality show.

Appearance is a crucial thing for youth these days. Appearance for them is everything. They believe in “you’ll never have second chance to make a first impression” so the first must be good. If you’re all covered up with brands, you’re cool. Adidas, Gucci, Nike, and Chanel would always attract people. And if you’re using them, you would obviously become people’s attraction too. Indie brands are also cool these days. Indie brands are simple yet are really attractive. However, brands are not that important. If you know how to mix and match and look cool, you’re still cool.

Another today’s trend is there’s no such thing as only for girls, or only for guys. Some stuff that are previously made only for girls are also now made available for the guys too. For example, men’s face washer, face cream, hair cream, as well as masker. Previously, it will be weird if guys pampered themselves with these stuff but nowadays, it’s no longer like that. Sometimes, these guys care for their appearance more than girls do. Today, jerseys and boots that are previously only for guys are also made for the girls. They even have baby-t jerseys nowadays. Girls who watch football till 3 am in the morning is cool. Girls who plays football are also cool.

Then again, being cool is subjective. Every people have their own definitions and perspectives on being cool. If A says you’re cool doesn’t mean that B would say the same thing. What’s important is to be yourself. If you’re being you, YOU’RE COOL!! and sometimes, NOT BEING COOL IS COOL!!

what a lousy trip!

Saturday, October 25, 2008

yesterday I came back from utp. wanna know how the journey was? damn lousy! I wake up early yesterday with hopes to arrive home early. after taking my bath and everything, Ila and I started our journey home. her bus is at 9.00am in Taman Maju. so, she and her boyfriend left me at the bus stop at about 8.30am. a bus came a short while after they drop me. but the bus refuse to stop! I had no choice as I'm not capable of chasing the bus, so I just wait for the next bus to come.

about 20 minutes later, another bus came. I went up the bus and payed the driver RM3 which is the usual price from utp to Medan Kidd. he showed me four fingers which I believed meant to say that I'm supposed to pay RM4. I was using my mp3 at that time, so I can't really hear what he's saying. I just grab a seat and turn off my mp3. the driver just rambles about money and something. at another stop, 2 men came up and they were charged RM5! we are going to the same place, yet we pay different amount! what a liar.

At about 9.20am, I arrived in Medan Kidd. I search for the Medan Gopeng bus to get to the bus station. Another guy from the same bus was doing the same. we went to a bus and ask the co-driver, "Uncle, bus ni pegi Medan Gopeng ke?" ("Uncle, does this bus go to Medan Gopeng?")

Uncle: "Ada pegi, ada pegi. Lai, mari naik" ("Yup, it does. Come up")

So, we grab a seat and payed they uncle RM1. Halfway through the journey, the uncle came to us.

Uncle:"Medan Gopeng ka? Aiya. Tadak pegi ar Medan Gopeng" ("Medan Gopeng is it? Aiya. We're not going to Medan Gopeng")

Guy: "Amacam ni uncle? Tadi kata pegi?" ("How come? Just now you said we're going?")

Uncle: "Aiya. Wa tersilap la. Takpa, you turun sini, you jalan depan sikit saja. Nanti you belok kanan dekat itu trafic light. Ada bus stop. Itu super kinta punya. Ha turun skarang."(Aiya. My fault. Never mind, you go down here, walk a bit and turn right when you see a traffic light. There's a bus stop at super kinta. Ha, go down now.")

so both of us got down, feeling stupid. we got to know each other though. he is studying in uitm going back to kl. we talked about how we were cheated from the first bus until now. he also told me that he even payed RM4 to the first bus driver! after walking quite far, we still can't see the traffic light. we decided to ask around. we had to ask twice before we got to the bus stop and it's damn far and I'm carrying a very heavy bag. luckily there's a bus going to Medan Gopeng about to depart.

payed another RM1.10 and we arrived safely at about 10.10 am. we laughed about what happened and went to buy our ticket. I bought the 10.30 am ticket and waited. Luck is not with me, the bus only came at 11 am! I had a long chat with an auntie going to Seremban while waiting for the bus. she was telling about how hard it is when students in boarding school is not allowed to bring hand phones. I got on the bus and fell asleep.

mama called at about 12.30pm to ask me where I am because she have an open house to go to. I said I'm in sungai bakap, which means that I'll be in Penang in about another half an hour or 45 minutes. however, the bus change its route and went to Penang first before Butterworth. So, I arrived in Penang in only about 15 minutes. Called mama and she told me she's already in front of the house. I had to wait as she turn back to fetch me. Luckily, I get to eat a lot at the open house. Haih! What a journey.

Kampung Jelempuk: where skies are green [Part 2]

Monday, September 22, 2008

I know, I know. I took a very long time to continue this post. I'm sorry. let's continue. later that night, my foster family took us to Kuala Perlis. we ate laksa for the second time that night! previously we ate a bowl (two bowls for me) at Mak Su's house. I was really full that night. After eating, they drove us around Kangar to see the city at night. Even though the city is small, it is still beautiful.

the next day, we woke up late (again! huhu) the whole day was filled in school. a lot of activities were done and all of them were interesting. the activities ended at around 3.30pm. all of us are really tired. Weird coz the kids doesn't seem to be that tired at all. we are suppose to have 'gotong-royong' to clean the village but there was heavy rain that evening. so, everything was canceled and all of us had our beauty sleep.

the family during closing ceremony

at about 7.00pm, we went to the mosque. there was a large break fast event. three of us went there with our foster father, angah and nadira. the food was nice but it wasn't as grand as I expected. the next day was our last day there. we went to the school for the closing ceremony. before the closing ceremony, we had sharing sessions with the kids. we shared our stories, and listen to theirs too. these kids have bright futures if the followed the correct way. I was very glad to be able to know them.

during break fast

back when I'm in SGGS, I remembered doing activities like this. but this time it's different. I noticed that village kids and city kids are different. when asked about ambitions, most of the village kids will answer either teacher or soldier. not city kids, they'll answer doctor, architect or some other jobs that the village kids may not even have heard of. why? i don't know why. but something should be done here.

the primary school crew

okay. I should continue. at about 3.30pm, we went to the mosque for the closing ceremony. our foster family had to give us up but our bonding stays. after the closing ceremony ends, we went to ayamas near Kangar. they wanted to buy us some food for break fast. after buying the food, they sent us back to the mosque. hajar, dkny and I started to feel sad to leave them.

buying 'ayam' in ayamas

even though we only knew each other for only 4 days, we really felt like a family. we got onto the bus but came down again because 'adik' was crying. we came down and gave them our tags so that they could remember us. at about 6.00pm, the bus drove off. we stop at RNR Gurun to break our fast and arrived in UTP at about 12.00am. Recmo was the best. I learned a lot and gained a lot. like what a friend of mine would say "Recmo VII terbaek!!".

Kampung Jelempuk: where skies are green [Part 1]

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

I just had to share this experience I had while being in Kampung Jelempuk. I was there from 11th to 14th September. I was there for RECMO, an event that I have been pain stackingly working on this semester. but I have to tell u that every drop of my sweat for RECMO was worth it.

we started our journey early in the morning on the 11th. I went with Anis, who went with Dkny and Ielah to v2. there, we carried boxes of heavy stuffs and hampers and put it in the bus. at about 10.30am, all the stuffs were in the bus, and everyone was there, so we depart. I spent the whole journey sleeping as I have only little sleep the night before. At about 3.00pm, we arrived at Masjid Kampung Jelempuk. The villagers are already there waiting for us.

the PNPs

the adopting ceremony began there. every family participating get two to three foster sons or daughters. name was called one by one and I was nervous waiting for my name to be called. after some time, my name was called. I'm adopted by Norshah & Nasirah family (which was interesting cause my Mama's name is Nazirah which is near to Nasirah) together with Dkny and KakHajar. we took some pictures then headed home.

us with our 'adik' Nasuha

their house was nice and cosy and I was comfortable there. my foster parents are friendly as well as their children except for Angah who appears to be a bit shy. my foster mother later on brought us to visit their families who are living nearby. she and our foster father also brought us to pasar malam in Pauh to buy some food for 'berbuka'. they also brought along their two daughters, Nadhira and the cute Nasuha.

the next day, I and Dkny woke up late. KakHajar was late too but she had something else to do. we actually need to go to the 'balai raya' that morning to help in carrying stuff and giving out 'pelita'. when we arrived there, almost everything was done. at about twelve, I decided to go home. Dkny needs to do something else, so I walked home with Bee and 5 'pelita' in my hand.

the registration crew

later in the afternoon, we went to SK Jelempuk where we had activities with the school kids. I was paired with Piske and was assigned to group number 14. the kids are great even though some them are shy. Piske and I introduced ourselves and do modules with them. what I don't understand is why they can call Piske 'abang Piske' but a simple name like mine, they can't pronounce. they called me 'cikgu' (teacher) instead. haih.

Piske and the kids

at about 5pm, we had another task. a program called 'bersamamu'. what we had to do was go to a few houses assigned to us and give them some food and hampers as donation. some of the houses visited was in a really bad condition. there's this one house that an old lady was staying. the house is very old and fragile. the old lady was living alone but looked very strong despite her age. She shared with us a lot of stories especially stories on how Malaysia was under the Japanese occupation.

one of the houses during 'bersamamu'

I learned to be more thankful when I was here in Kampung Jelempuk as I have great family, live in luxury and doesn't need to go through much hardship. oops, I have to go now. Wait for Part 2! and oh, I'll add the pictures later.

what? blackout?

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

heheh. ::grinning:: today is Waniii's BIRTHDAY! Happy Birthday Waniii!. we put a trick on her just now. she have a test tommorow so she needs to study. so, we made the house blackout, and get the stuff for her celebration ready. as imagined, she came out from her room to see why there's blackout. and there you go, she's so suprised to see us and KFC at the kitchen.

welcome Ramadhan!

Monday, September 01, 2008

in about another 20 minute, we'll be breaking our fast for our first day of Ramadhan. Ramadhan is the month where Muslims all over the world fast for a month. Fasting in the month of Ramadhan is one of the pillars of Islam.

“Hai orang-orang yang beriman, diwajibkan atas kamu berpuasa sebagaimana diwajibkan atas orang-orang sebelum kamu agar kamu bertakwa,”

O Believers! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may learn self restraint, (Surah al-Baqarah 2 : 183)

my youngest sister is also fasting today. last year, she managed to fast for the whole month. we surely do hope that she'll manage to do the same this year. I'm very happy that today we managed to break our fast together as a family.

by the way, yesterday, Malaysia celebrated her 51st independence day. a lot of ways people did to celebrate this auspicious event. what I like most during merdeka is the fireworks during the countdown and the parade on the next morning. I like to watch people in colourful uniforms march pass the VIPs as well as the performance by the children early in the morning. I'll always wake up early to watch this. Eyh, it's time to go now.

need to study!!

should i be sick?

Monday, August 18, 2008

tonight, I have runny nose, a headache, and a sore throat. I felt fatigued all over my body, and only wanted to sleep. suddenly, I was reminded of this infamous quote by a senior of mine.

' You are sick, only if you say you are'
- Reenee Atira Mohd Shree

she meant that if you are sick and treat yourself like you're sick, i.e lying around doing nothing, sleeping 24 hours, being weak all the time, etc, then you are going to be really sick. but if you're sick but you act normally, you brace yourself to do normal stuff that you do when your not sick, then in no time, you'll be okay. these saying has been used long among me and my friends in sggs so that we wouldn't be so weak each time we're sick.

what my senior said might be true. I knew a guy who is physically challenge but never admitted defeat. he wasn't normal, but he never reacted weak and doesn't like people to sympathized him. he's a university student now and is as successful as other normal people. I bet if he take he's disability as a barrier and decided to stay weak and do nothing about it, he wouldn't be this successful. ermm so, should I say I'm sick now? or maybe i'll say I'm not well but not sick either. ::smilling::

the colourful night of KYSM talent time

Saturday, August 16, 2008

we took a flight to kl yesterday and dad drove us straight to kysm. it was their family day. so, as a family, we came. kysm is my brother's school and last night, there was this talent time. at first, me and my family did not plan to watch it because we were all tired with all the traveling. but JJ insisted us in watching at least a few performance so, we stayed. songs after songs being performed, we decided to stay till the end.

the performance started with solo performers followed by the group performers. they had four emcee's and the four of them was really fun. they were bubbly and entertaining. they're great with words and know how to handle the stage when some technical errors happen.

as for the singers, most of the singers can sing well. they got great courage to perform up there in front of a crowd of parents, families and schoolmates. there are some of these singers that I really like. one of the most entertaining performance is from the Biru group who sang 'Kenapa Singgah Kalau Tak Masuk'. they had great response from the audience as well as the judges hence winning the group category.

biru! biru!

their principal was cool too. she also contributed a song that night, as part of the special performance. she sung 'Fly Me Too The Moon' which was quite a famous song. her voice was okay too. she also managed to get some flowers from her male students ::=P:: Overall, the talent time was a blast!
